[xx] Osteomyelitis

Osteo: bone

myel: bone marrow.

itis: inflammation

 

Symptoms

-Inflammation(mostly S. Aureus) through the blood stream, Fever, weakness

 

Diagnosis

- complete blood count (CBC)

  * increased WBC(Leukocytosis: 감염이니까 당연히 WBC 올라가겠지)

  * increased Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)

  * Increased C-reaction protein (CRP)

- X-ray

  * thickening of the cortical bone & periosteum

  * elevation of the periosteum

  * loss of the normal architecture (especially trabecular architecture)

  * osteopenia (loss of bone mass) -> evident when > half of bone matrix is destroyed.

-Bone scan or MRI to confirm the presence of osteomyelitis and identify an abscess.

-Bone biopsy to identify the pathogen and confirm the diagnosis.

 

Tx

-Antibiotics

-if there's an abscess -> surgery.

-surgery needed to remove any necrotic bone
